This includes stopping at the lights and queuing in traffic. You can get six penalty points and a £ 200 fine if you re found to be using your phone and if you passed in the last two years you ll be banned completely. Speed Limit Whilst one of the benefits to riding a bike might be beating the traffic contrary to what some people think the speed limit for a motorbike is exactly the same as a car. 30mph in built up areas 60mph on single carriageways and 70mph on dual carriageways and motorways. If you are caught speeding on a motorbike you ll be fined a minimum of £ 100 and could even lose your licence. Be Seen The Highway Code advises motorcyclists to wear bright or fluorescent clothing both during the day and at night to help them be seen by drivers. This is even more important at night when fluorescent strips reflect other motorists headlights ensuring you can be seen. Moneybarn have also shared their top safety tips for motorcyclists: Never ride without a helmet - and goggles and gloves whilst not a law are also a must. Always give your bike a once-over before hitting the road - tyre pressure mirrors and lights. Plus never delay fixing something that needs attention - whether that s your oil levels or brake pads. Don t over rely on your mirrors when changing lanes - keep aware of your surroundings and whether other road users are paying attention to you. Stay vigilant for potential gravel on the roads as well as where the road curves round. Make sure your passenger is clued up on safety too and wearing the correct gear - including shoes.
