New research has revealed the cities with the most (& least) expensive low emission zone penalty charges - London ranks as the 4th highest at £ 80. The study by confused.com analysed the penalty charges for cars across a number of major global cities to reveal the cities with the most (& least) expensive LEZs. The city seemingly taking the strictest stance when it comes to its low emission zone is the Belgian capital of Brussels. The entirety of the Brussels-Capital Region is deemed an LEZ and petrol and diesel vehicles must adhere to the Euro 2 and 5 emission standard respectively. Failure to comply with the rules means that you ll be hit with a £ 291 fine. Two more Belgian cities come in second place. Antwerp and Ghent both have minimum emission standards of Euro 5 for diesel vehicles and Euro 2 for petrol and will charge you £ 125 for a first offence but this figure will increase rapidly for repeat offences. A number of cities across the Netherlands and Spain are tied in third place each with penalty charges of £ 83 for failing to meet the rules in their low emission zones. The city home to the lowest penalty charge is Beijing. The city introduced an LEZ back in 2009 which has since been expanded although the penalty fee for driving in the zone is just RMBa100 which equates to around £ 12. Three cities in Norway use low emission zones: Oslo Bergen and Kristiansand. In each of these cities all vehicles have to pay a charge to enter the zone but more polluting cars have to pay extra. Failure to pay the toll results in a fine of £ 25.
